How we test, evaluate, and rank external SSDs

At Portable SSDs, our mission is to help you find the best external SSD for your needs through rigorous, independent analysis and transparent data. Here is exactly how we do it. Browse our curated SSD rankings and buying guides.

Our Scoring System

Every product receives an overall score out of 10, calculated from weighted sub-scores across five categories:

  • Performance (35%) — Sequential read/write speeds, sustained write performance, random IOPS, and thermal throttling behavior, based on manufacturer-published specifications and corroborated third-party benchmark data.
  • Value (25%) — Price per gigabyte compared to category averages. We factor in warranty length, TBW endurance rating, and bundled accessories.
  • Build Quality (20%) — Enclosure materials, ingress protection (IP rating), drop resistance, cable quality, and thermal design, assessed from manufacturer specifications and corroborated editorial and third-party impressions.
  • Features (10%) — Interface (USB4, Thunderbolt, Gen 2x2, Gen 2), hardware encryption, software suite, RGB lighting, and additional ports.
  • User Experience (10%) — Setup ease, software usability, noise levels, and operating temperature, drawn from aggregated editorial and user feedback.

Scores are calculated from manufacturer-published specifications and corroborated third-party data, not from benchmark runs conducted in our lab. We apply a consistent rubric so products are comparable on the same axes.

How We Source Product Data

  • Specifications — Capacity, interface, read/write speeds, endurance (TBW), warranty, and form factor are taken from manufacturer datasheets and official product pages, cross-checked against retailer listings.
  • Prices — Collected from Amazon, B&H Photo, and Newegg via their authorized APIs and updated regularly. We display the lowest available current price and retain 30 days of price history for each product. Coverage expands as additional retailer feeds are integrated.
  • Editorial notes — Pros, cons, and archetype fit are written by our editorial staff based on aggregated specifications, third-party benchmark data, and category expertise.

Pricing Data

Prices are collected from Amazon, B&H Photo, and Newegg via their authorized APIs and updated regularly. We display the lowest current price for each product and maintain 30 days of price history to help you identify trends and sales. Coverage expands as additional retailer feeds are integrated.

Editorial Independence

Our rankings are entirely algorithmic and data-driven. We do not accept payment, free products, or any form of compensation in exchange for favorable placement or reviews. Editorial assessments are based on aggregated specifications, third-party benchmark data, and our standardized scoring rubric — not on hands-on testing of retail samples.

Our Roadmap

We are actively expanding coverage and rigor. Planned improvements include broader retailer price feeds, expanded editorial review coverage, and — when warranted — a standardized external-SSD benchmark testbed (with disclosed USB4/Thunderbolt bridge chips and host controllers). Current rankings rely on aggregated manufacturer and third-party data.
